Who says commercial roofing can’t be exciting? Here are some unique, interesting facts about commercial roof coatings.
Urban Heat Island Effect
Ever heard of the “Urban Heat Island” effect? It’s when urban areas become significantly warmer simply due to the fact of heat absorption by surrounding buildings and pavement.
Essentially if all the buildings are close and “huddled” together then they can feed off of each other’s heat.
In turn, this leads to increased energy consumption and higher greenhouse gas emissions. But the interesting thing is this, roof coatings have been shown to mitigate the urban heat island effect by reflecting sunlight.
As we mentioned previous in this post on Sustainability and Roof Coatings, we’ve seen some clients experience a significant reduction in their cooling costs simply by add a reflective topcoat to their roof surface. Studies have even shows that reflective roof coatings can reduce the surface temperature of a roof by 50°F and reduce cooling costs by up to 20%.
Not only does this have a personal effect for the building owner and occupants, we’re ultimately having a positive impact on the environment.
Roof Coatings Don’t Require Permits
Where we serve in Omaha, NE roof coatings do not require a permit which means we can get to work as soon as our schedule and the weather allows.
In contrast, a typical re-roof requires a permit that could cost anywhere from $20-$200 and the approval process can take anywhere from days to several weeks- particularly for commercial or industrial roofing projects.
Some Roof Coatings Have AntiMicrobial Properties
You might think this is an odd thing to even know, but some silicone-based roof coatings contain biocide or other antimicrobial agent. The purpose of adding these into the makeup of the product is to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi.
This is particularly useful in areas of high humidity (such as coastal regions) or building with no ventilation that are prone to mold.
