What is Thermal Expansion and How Does it Affect Metal Roofs?

Unless you’re a scientist you probably don’t ever talk or think about “Thermal Expansion”. However, if you own a building with a metal roof then it’s something you should be aware of.

Thermal expansion is a phenomenon that occurs when materials expand/contract in response to temperature fluctuations. In the case of metal roofs, it can be a significant factor.

What Metals are Used on Metal Roofs?

A typical metal roof is comprised often of steel, aluminum, or copper and each of these metals have different rates of thermal expansion when exposed to thermal changes. For example, steel is classified as having a higher coefficient of thermal expansion over aluminum which means that it will expand/contract more with the same temperature change.

The Effects of Thermal Expansion on Metal Roofs

As a result, metal roofs are most susceptible to significant expansion and contraction as temperatures rise and fall. This can create problems- particularly if the roof was not designed and installed properly.

Often, if the metal panels are not allowed to expand and contract freely, they may buckle or warp. This leads to leaks, cracks, and gaps in the roof edge. An experienced metal roofer can install systems to adapt for thermal expansion such as specialized clips or fasteners that can accommodate for expansion and contraction.

Benefits of Roof Coatings on Metal Roofs

Many builder owners don’t realize but roof coatings have been shown to reduce the effects of thermal expansion. If the roof coating is reflecting the heat from the sun then it can minimize the amount absorbed by your roof. (Thereby reducing the expansion amount.)

Additionally, we carry Triton 2k which has a 1200% elongation rating that can expand and contract with your roof throughout weather changes. This is especially useful in areas such as the Midwest where we experience all four seasons.

Our roofing experts can analyze your roof and make recommendations on which specific coating is best suited for your metal roof.

Summary

Thermal expansion has the potential to adversely affect your roof if the roofing contractor did not build/install it correctly. The benefits of using a roof coating on your metal roof help combat the effects of thermal expansion and increase the longevity of your roofing system.
